In this enrichment class, your child will get one-on-one time with our wonderful Reading Buddies teacher, Ms. Jacque, each week to focus on basic pre-reading skills. This will take place in a relaxed setting with no worksheets or table work—just open-ended discussions with plenty of time to delve into stories and create a love of reading. 

 

Concepts we will be reviewing:

Phonemic awareness—being able to hear, identify, and play with individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words.

Phonics—being able to connect the letters of written language with the sounds of spoken language.

Print—understanding that letters make words and words create stories.

Vocabulary—introducing new words with stories and discussing their meanings through context.

Reading comprehension—being able to understand and get meaning from what has been read as well as being able to retell the story.

Reading helps develop a young child's brain. In the first six years, children learn at a much faster pace than at any other time in their lives. Reading opens the door to your child's early academic success, imparts a love of learning and leads to higher grades in every subject for future academics. A child who learns to read joyfully with a loving parent or caregiver, grows in self-confidence and independence. For these reasons and countless others, our school places a high priority on introducing pre-reading skills while fostering a love of reading and books..
